Can I use my own machine for CBT/125/DAS training? Yes. Of course you can, in fact, some pupils feel more at home on their own bikes, but the machine must meet all current regulations before being used for training and test purposes, this means a 125 MUST be capable of reaching 60mph, FULL size L plates must be displayed, and of course if you you have a mishap be prepared for a repair bill, the U turn can be tricky on a fully faired sports bike!

I have been driving for years and have a full CAR/LGV licence, do I still have to pass the motorcycle theory test? Afraid so. Regardless of your driving history, you must sucessfully complete the motorcycle theory test in order to sit a practical motorcycle test. A pass is valid for 2 years, the same length of time as the CBT. The cost is currently £30 and comprises of 50 questions and 15 hazard perception video clips.

What licence do I get if I pass my test on a 125? Passing your test on a 125 will allow you to ride ANY MOTORCYCLE, you are not stuck on a 125, the only provision is the new bike has to be restricted to 33bhp, this costs approximately £200 to complete, this licence restriction is lifted after 2 years, allowing you to ride your machine at FULL POWER. So a full Cat A licence can be obtained at 19, if you pass on a 125 at 17.

What age do I have to be to get a motorcycle licence? 16 to complete CBT. 17 to ride a 125 and complete 125 training, 21 to complete DAS training. If you pass your test at 17 on a 125, the youngest age you can be is 19 with a FULL UK motorcycle licence.

What documentation do I need to start training? You MUST be possesion of a UK driving licence, provisional or full, in order to complete the first step which is CBT. If you have another european driving licence this must be exchanged for a UK licence or obtain the UK counterpart which contains a UK DRIVER NUMBER, if you do not have this driver number you cannot train for CBT or 125/DAS. Forms can be obtained from the Post Office.

I've heard rumours that the motorcycle test is changing, is this true? You heard right! The motorcycle test is set for an update in October 2008, this will include a new 'Off Road' section, comprising of a set number of exercises before the road ride. You will also have to travel further to complete your practical test at one of the new DSA Multi purpose test centres (MPTC's), these will be at KINGS LYNN and PETERBOROUGH. The new off the road section will include a machine handling exercise, the U turn, Figure of 8, riding through a slalom of cones, 50kph (31 mph) hazard avoidance exercise, 50 kph controlled stop and a timed slow speed ride. If your clutch control isn't great, get some practice, you're gonna need it. The clock is ticking!

I passed my CBT on a moped aged 16, I'm now 17 do I have to complete another CBT to ride a 125? No. the CBT you passed when you were 16 is still valid until you are 18 (2 years from date of issue) it is only age which stops you riding a 125, on your 17th birthday, get a 125 and feel the power!

I passed my car test in the mid 70's do I need a CBT to hop on a 50cc scooter to get me to work? If you passed your car driving test before February 2001 you do not need a CBT for a 50cc scooter (although we do recommend you complete a CBT). Should you then get bored and wish to upgrade to a larger capacity machine you need a CBT for anything over 50cc. The 2 year rule for renewal then applies. But on the plus side you don't need L plates on the 50cc!

My CBT is due for renewal, can I just do a refresher CBT? No. The CBT must cover all 5 elements and be completed in accordance with current regulations. Any training body offering a cut price 'Refresher' CBT is breaking the law, remember, you get what you pay for!
