FAQ's

I am a complete novice to motorcycle riding but want my full licence, it seems complicated, what do I do? The first step is to complete the CBT this will give you an idea of what riding a motorcycle is all about. Then if you wish to continue further, you must pass the motorcycle theory test, then complete training to pass the Module 1 & 2 tests to obtain your full CAT A motorcycle licence.

What age do I have to be to get a motorcycle/moped licence? 16 to complete CBT and ride a 50cc, 17 or over to ride a 125cc, 21 to complete Direct Access Scheme training.

What documentation do I need to start training? You MUST be possesion of a UK driving licence, provisional or full, in order to complete CBT training. If you have an European driving licence this must be exchanged for a UK licence or obtain the UK counterpart which contains a UK DRIVER NUMBER, if you do not have this driver number you cannot train for CBT. Forms can be obtained from the Post Office. Please Note :- Provisonal licences can be applied for 90 days before your 16th birthday and can be obtained Online at the Direct Gov website.

Can I use my own bike for CBT/125/DAS training? Yes, of course, but the machine must meet all current test regulations before being used for training/test purposes, and must be capable of reaching 60mph if a 125cc. The machine must be road legal, insured and FULL SIZE L plates must be displayed front and rear. Its the LAW. Click here to check the status of your bike A1/A2 for test purposes

I have been driving for years and have a full CAR/LGV licence, do I still have to pass the motorcycle theory test? Yes. Regardless of your driving history, you must sucessfully complete the motorcycle theory test for MOTORCYCLE CAT A in order to sit a practical test. A pass is valid for 2 years, the same length of time as the CBT. The cost is currently £31 and comprises of 50 questions and 15 hazard perception video clips. Click here to link to 'Booking a Motorcycle theory Test'.

What are the restrictions if I pass my practical test on a 125? Do not dismiss this route to your licence, providing your machine is classed as an A2 125, passing your practical test on a 125cc will allow you to ride ANY MOTORCYCLE, providing it is restricted to 33bhp, which costs approximately £200 to complete the modifications. The power restriction is lifted after 2 years, giving you an automatic upgrade to a Full CAT A motorcycle licence, allowing you to ride your machine at FULL POWER. No further tests are required. (If your machine is only an A1 125 you will only be allowed to ride that machine after passing your practical test.) See above link for details.

I've heard that the motorcycle test has changed, is this true? Yes, the motorcycle test was updated in April 2009 and a new 2 module test is now in operation. This new 2 part test has now been modified and the module 1 part of the test now allows a margin for rider error, making it safer and easier to complete.

I passed my CBT on a moped aged 16, I'm now 17 do I have to complete another CBT to ride a 125? No. the CBT you completed when you were 16 is still valid until you are 18 (2 years from date of issue) it is only age which stops you riding a 125, on your 17th birthday, get a 125 and keep up with the traffic!

I passed my car test in the mid 70's, do I need a CBT to hop on a 50cc scooter to get me to work? If you passed your car driving test before February 2001 you do not need a CBT for a 50cc scooter (although we do recommend you complete the training). Should you then get bored and wish to upgrade to a larger bike you will need to complete CBT for anything over 50cc. The 2 year rule for renewal then applies.

My CBT is due for renewal, now I have been riding for 2 years can I ride a 33bhp bike with L plates ? No. You can only remove your L Plates and ride the larger capacity bike when you have passed the Motorcycle theory test, Module 1 and Module 2 practical tests, on the bike of your choice. To continue to ride your 125cc with L plates you must complete the CBT again, but check the expiry date of your CBT, no CBT means NO Insurance and NO Valid Licence !
