THE CLOCK IS TICKING !

The European 3rd Driving Licence Directive will come into force in January 2013. (That’s less than 12 months away!)

So what, how will this affect me ?

The route to a full CAT A motorcycle licence is changing, BIG Style !

1. Direct Access Age will rise from 21 to 24.

2. No more 33bhp Licence.

3. Much longer on a 'Restricted Power' Motorcycle

If you are under 24, you will have to go through a ‘Progressive’ route to a full motorcycle licence. (Details are yet to be confirmed but a rough outline below should help to explain.)

Current Date – Early January 2013 . (17-21 years of Age).

  1. Pass CBT
  2. Pass Motorcycle theory test
  3. Complete MOD1 Training/Test on 125cc Motorcycle
  4. Complete MOD2 Training/Test on 125cc Motorcycle

Awarded CAT A motorcycle licence (Restricted to 33bhp, for 2 years). After 2 years, the 33bhp power restriction is lifted, you can then ride ANY motorcycle.

From January 2013. New 3DLD Progressive route. (17-24 years of Age).

  1. Pass CBT
  2. Pass Motorcycle Theory test
  3. Complete MOD1 Training/Test on 125cc Motorcycle (A1)
  4. Complete MOD2 Training/Test on 125cc Motorcycle (A1)

Awarded A1 Motorcycle licence, allowing you to continue to ride a 125cc without L plates, for 2 years. WOW !

Then progress from A1 to A2 (47bhp motorcycle), but only after 2 years experience on 125cc A1 licence, this progress has yet to be decided but will be either compulsory training or further testing, when completed you are awarded an A2 Motorcycle licence allowing you to ride an A2 motorcycle (47bhp motorcycle), for 2 years.

Only after 2 years on an A2 machine will you then be allowed to ride a full power motorcycle, so, a 4 year progressive restriction in all.

MY ADVICE, DON'T HANG ABOUT !

Get your test passed as soon as possible if you are under 21, otherwise its going be a long time to wait for your full licence. You only have 12 months before the law changes for good !
